Brain Injury Awareness Month:

Every March, we recognize Brain Injury Awareness Month — a time dedicated to increasing understanding about brain injuries, promoting prevention, supporting those affected by brain injury, and advocating for better care.

What is a Brain Injury?

A brain injury can occur from trauma (like a fall, car accident, or sports injury) or from non-traumatic causes (such as stroke, tumors, or infections). Brain injuries range from mild concussions to severe trauma, often affecting cognitive, emotional, and physical abilities.

Brain Injury Signs and Symptoms to Look For:

  • Headaches
  • Memory loss or confusion
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Mood changes
  • Dizziness or balance issues
  • Sensitivity to light or noise

Sometimes, people who sustain brain injury don’t realize they need help.  So be aware of the signs and symptoms so you can guide them to seek medical attention if needed.

Living with a Brain Injury

Recovery from a brain injury is different for everyone. Some recover quickly while others may benefit from rehabilitation services.  Physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and counseling for coping or lifestyle adjustments can play a crucial role in recovery. Support from family, friends, and others with brain injury can make a big difference as well.  To find local support resources, check the American Brain Injury Association’s listings.

How You Can Show Support for Brain Injury:

  • Learn about brain injuries and share information
  • Wear green to raise awareness
  • Support local brain injury organizations
  • Advocate for policies that improve access to care and rehabilitation services

Every brain injury is unique — and every journey to recovery matters. Let's come together to break the stigma, raise awareness, and support those living with brain injuries.
