What is IpsiHand®?

IpsiHand® is an innovative, FDA-cleared stroke recovery device designed to help people regain arm and hand function after stroke. While a stroke often damages the motor cortex—the part of the brain responsible for movement—the muscles themselves may remain healthy. The challenge is that the brain has difficulty sending movement signals to the affected arm and hand.

IpsiHand helps address this problem by retraining the brain through neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to form new neural connections and pathways after injury.

Unlike many rehabilitation technologies, IpsiHand is non-invasive, requires no surgery, no pharmaceutical drugs, and no long-term wear. It is designed to be simple to use and can be put on or removed using only one hand.

How Does IpsiHand® Work?

IpsiHand uses a wearable EEG headset to detect healthy brain activity when you think about moving your affected hand.

• Imagine . . . As you concentrate on moving your affected hand, healthy areas of your brain generate electrical signals. The EEG headset detects these signals and interprets your intention to move.
• Therapy . . . The IpsiHand system recognizes your movement intention and sends commands to a robotic handpiece that opens and closes your hand accordingly.
• Reconnect . . . Through repeated practice, the brain begins strengthening existing neural pathways and creating new ones. This process encourages recovery by helping healthy parts of the brain take over movement control. In rehabilitation, we often say, "What fires together, wires together."

One of the unique benefits of IpsiHand is that users do not need voluntary hand movement to begin therapy. The device responds to the intention to move, making it a valuable option for individuals with significant weakness.

Proven Stroke Recovery Results

Clinical studies have demonstrated meaningful improvements in arm and hand function following IpsiHand therapy.

Clinical Trial Outcomes:  Across three clinical trials, participants experienced significant improvements in upper extremity function, including:

• Average improvement of +10.2 points on the Arm Motor Ability Test (AMAT)
• Average improvement of +7.7 points on the Fugl-Meyer Assessment, considered the gold standard test for arm function after stroke
• Increased independence with daily activities

Lasting Benefits:  Participants not only improved during treatment but continued to maintain their gains after therapy ended.

Whole-Arm Improvement:  Although therapy focuses on hand movement, clinical trials showed improvements throughout the entire arm.

Designed for Intensive At-Home Therapy: IpsiHand was developed to support intensive rehabilitation both in the clinic and at home. Because the device is portable and easy to use, it allows stroke survivors to take advantage of key neuroplasticity principles:

• Repetition matters
• Intensity matters

Typical users complete independent therapy sessions for approximately one hour per day, five days per week. The portability of the system even allows therapy to continue while traveling.

IpsiHand® Eligibility Criteria

You may be eligible if you:

• Had a stroke more than six months ago
• Are 18 years of age or older
• Experience arm or hand weakness following stroke
• Have not had recent neurosurgery resulting in soft spots, indentations, or scalp irritation
• Do not have severe hand or wrist contractures or severe spasticity
• Do not have severe cognitive impairments

Participants should also be able to:

• Follow one-step visual or written instructions
• Visually follow graphics displayed on a tablet
• Hold their head upright without support for approximately 60 minutes 

Is IpsiHand® Covered by Insurance?

IpsiHand may be covered by commercial insurance plans and certain Medicare Advantage plans. Coverage varies by plan, and eligibility can be discussed during your screening appointment.
