North AL ALS Support Group

The North AL ALS Support Group gets together on the 2nd Tue of the month from 4:00 - 5:00 to learn about living with ALS and to spend time with friends.  We meet at the Senior Center - 2200 Drake Ave SW, Huntsville, AL.  You can attend in person or virtually.  Please email jennifer.nester-farmer@als.org for a Zoom link to attend virtually.

June 2024 North AL ALS Support Group MeetUp

Regina Owens with Gentiva Hospice will be give a presentation on hospice care at our June meeting.  Regina worked as a hospice social worker for many years. Regina is a true patient advocate, assessing needs, providing end-of-life education, emotional support and supportive counseling to clients and their family. Regina has provided the appropriate referrals to various community resources, provided supportive listening, assisted with advanced directives, and helped families make end of life decisions. 

Regina enjoys her work, as well as spending time with her family and friends.  She is happy to answer any questions you may have.  

May 2024 North AL ALS Support Group MeetUp

We are organizing a community picnic for our families on 5/18/24 at Brahan Spring Park. We hope that the picnic will allow our families to make connections and continue to build their support network. 

April 2024 North AL ALS Support Group MeetUp

We will be meeting virtually for April’s support group on 4/9 from 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM. As the weather warms up and people begin planning their summer vacations, we will be discussing adaptable ways to travel.

January 2024 North AL ALS Support Group MeetUp

We will be discussing and sharing ideas to live our lives with intent and purpose while managing an ALS diagnosis.

December 2023 North AL ALS Support Group MeetUp

We will be having an end-of-year celebration at our December meeting with food and games. If you are planning to attend in person, please respond to this email so that we have enough space to accommodate everyone.

November 2023 North AL ALS Support Group MeetUp

November is Caregiver Appreciation Month. We will be taking this support group to honor and celebrate our caregivers. We will be sharing caregiver stories, self-care tips, and ALSA resources that can provide support to you.

If you would like to share something special about the person who helps you – we would love to hear your story. We will have light refreshments available.

We will be discussing home modifications and ALSA resources to complete identified projects.

September 2023 North AL ALS Support Group MeetUp

We will have three guest speakers to talk with us about all the in’s and out’s of home health care and hospice care.  Linda Killian who is with Seniors Prefer Homecare will be talking with us about nonmedical home health care and the services that Seniors Prefer Homecare provides.  Kathryn Lang and Courtney Jeffreys from Amedisys will be sharing information about hospice care and home health services. 

This will be a great group to ask all your questions about home health and hospice services. Also, learn about the benefits of home health and hospice care to empower your decisions.

August 2023 North AL ALS Support MeetUp

At our August meeting, we will be sharing information on how to make your iPad or/and iPhone more accessible to your needs.

April 2023 North AL ALS Support MeetUp

 We will have a special guest speaker, Alisa Brownlee, who is the Manager of Assistive Technology Services for the ALSA. Alisa will be providing information on how our ALS families can safely travel while including some helpful tips. 

Alisa has been in the field of assistive technology for over 20 years. Alisa speaks, blogs, writes articles, and uses social media to increase awareness of ALS and the use of assistive technology. Her specialty areas are communication, computer access, electronic aids for daily living, and home modifications.
