Relay for Life: One Man's Passion

The story began in 1985 with Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Washington. Wanting to raise money for his local American Cancer Society, he decided to do something he loved—run. That May, he spent 24 hours circling the track at Baker Stadium, logging more than 83 miles. Friends and family donated $25 to walk or run laps with him, and by the end of the event, he had raised $27,000. Inspired by the community’s support, Dr. Klatt transformed this idea into something much bigger—the spark that eventually became Relay for Life.
The Spark That Turned Into A Flame
As Relay grew, it evolved into a team-based event. Anyone can form a team, whether it’s a group of one or 100+. Teams set fundraising goals and get creative throughout the year—bake sales, car washes, themed parties, and countless imaginative ideas have contributed to its success.
 By 2012, Dr. Klatt remained deeply involved in Relay, but for the first time, he participated as a cancer survivor. He had been diagnosed with stomach cancer earlier that year. He continued to fight until August 2014, when he passed away at age 71 from heart failure. His legacy lives on in every Relay event held worldwide.
Relay for Life Today
Today, more than 4 million people across 20+ countries participate in Relay for Life each year. It continues as an overnight celebration that honors survivors, recognizes caregivers, and remembers those we’ve lost.
Relay events take place in stadiums, town squares, conference centers, and anywhere a walking track can be created. One memorable year, Huntsville held its Relay beneath the rocket at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center! The atmosphere is festive—full of music, food, laughter, and moments of deep reflection.
 

Teams design t-shirts, decorate tents and tables, and create a colorful, supportive community around the track. Survivors lead the way with the first Victory Lap, followed by a special lap honoring caregivers. Participants then walk in tribute to loved ones—past and present—who have faced cancer.

When night falls, the Luminaria Ceremony begins. This emotional and beautiful tradition honors survivors and remembers those who have passed away. Luminaria bags—decorated and personalized with names or messages—are illuminated from within. Each light represents a life and shines with hope for a cancer-free future.

The American Cancer Society remains committed to saving lives. Seventy-five percent of the funds raised go directly to cancer research, patient support, detection and treatment programs, and prevention and education efforts. Their impact is real: since 1991, the cancer death rate has dropped by 23%.
